Healthy Habits - Start Early
Even before Viking warriors wore necklaces made from baby teeth for luck, our children’s first teeth held a special place in many cultures….and now, kids across the world eagerly await visits from the Tooth Fairy.
Just because these teeth will someday come out doesn’t mean you don’t need to care for them. Baby teeth help your child speak and eat and they help adult teeth align accurately when they erupt
Teach kids excellent oral health habits that will help them to ensure a lifetime of beautiful smiles.
Consider taking your child to the dentist now before the school starts.
JULY 2019
Summer sun brings summer fun. This season is perfect for spending time together, summer vacation can also throw off your usual dental routine. Here are ways to prevent summertime tooth decay:
Stay on a routine
Whether your kids are staying up to catch fireflies or a fireworks show, resist the temptation to skip brushing before a late bedtime—or let it slide when they sleep in the next morning. “Don’t forget about your smile over the summer,” says ADA pediatric dentist Dr. Mary Hayes. “It’s important for families to consistently brush and floss, which keeps kids on track for healthy back-to-school dental visits.”
No matter how eventful the upcoming months become, supervise that they are brushing twice a day for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste. Simple things like brushing calendars can help everyone stay on track over the summer. Brushing alongside your children for 2 minutes, twice a day for the three months of summer gives you 6 extra hours together, so make the most of them!
And don’t forget to clean between those teeth once a day. “Your children should be flossing between any two teeth that touch,” Dr. Hayes says. “However, many kids don’t have motor skills to floss until they are over 10 years old.” If your child needs help, try different types of interdental cleaners or put your hands over theirs to guide them and get the job done at the same time.
Finally remember to schedule your regular dental cleaning visit with your hygienist to keep everything in check for proper maintenance of your oral health.

Probably more common at the holiday time of year is the more insidious damage of dental plaque left to slowly dissolve tooth structure as a person sleeps because everyone had so much fun until so late that the toothbrush and floss got left unused. Remember that sleep is really hard on teeth because salivary flow is low. At night, the bacteria that make up dental plaque multiply rapidly without being disturbed. The most effective time to eliminate plaque from the teeth is in the evening just before going to bed. Brushing with fluoride-containing toothpaste or other fluoride preparation, spitting into the sink, and not rinsing, flossing, then going directly to bed will maximize the remineralization (tooth building) capacity of the fluoride. If this is followed up with a thorough brushing and flossing in the morning shortly after waking up, you can turn night time from a time of dissolution of tooth components into a time of rebuilding tooth components.

Flossing helps both teeth and gums stay healthy by removing debris and the plaque that collects in between teeth. Brushing alone cleans only 60 per cent of the tooth surfaces, as the bristles cannot effectively remove debris from the spaces between teeth.
Studies have shown that different flosses work equally well, but what works best for one person might not work well for another. Waxed floss is suitable for tight contacts between teeth and is more resilient to breakage. Unwaxed floss may be more efficient at removing plaque. For those with manual dexterity problems, interdental cleaners can ease the process.
